What Is Neuropathy?

June 8, 2023 Rosalind Armstrong

I decided to write a blog post about this condition since having a family member diagnosed with this, I will do a follow up post on any further diagnosis in the near future. Neuropathy is a condition that affects the nerves in the body, leading to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and pain. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including diabetes, chemotherapy, and alcoholism. While neuropathy is a well-known condition, there is a new form of neuropathy that is becoming increasingly common: small fiber neuropathy. www.amazon.com/dp/B07LFKTQHX

Small fiber neuropathy is a type of neuropathy that affects the small nerve fibers in the body. These fibers are responsible for transmitting pain and temperature sensations, as well as controlling the autonomic nervous system, which regulates functions such as heart rate and digestion. When these fibers are damaged, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, including: www.amazon.com/dp/B07LFKTQHX

- Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet

- Burning or shooting pains

- Increased sensitivity to temperature

- Loss of sweating in affected areas

- Digestive issues, such as bloating and constipation

- Changes in blood pressure and heart rate

Small fiber neuropathy can be caused by a variety of factors, including autoimmune diseases, infections, genetic disorders, and exposure to certain toxins. In some cases, the cause is unknown.www.amazon.com/dp/B07LFKTQHX

Diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy can be challenging, as it requires specialized testing to detect damage to the small nerve fibers. Skin biopsies and nerve conduction studies are common diagnostic tools used by neurologists to diagnose small fiber neuropathy.

Treatment for small fiber neuropathy depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, treating the underlying condition, such as controlling blood sugar levels in diabetes, can help improve symptoms. Medications such as pain relievers and antidepressants may also be prescribed to manage symptoms. www.amazon.com/dp/B07LFKTQHX

While small fiber neuropathy is a relatively new form of neuropathy, it is becoming increasingly recognized by healthcare professionals. If you are experiencing symptoms of small fiber neuropathy, it is important to seek medical attention from a neurologist or other healthcare professional with expertise in this area. Early diagnosis and treatment can help improve symptoms and prevent further nerve damage.
